The secured zone in this image is a prison. I would say the prison is both crusty and jittery space. Prison is a quarantined zone where prisoners are held inside. Access from both outside and inside is not as easy as many other spaces in public. The reason that prisoners are temporarily quarantined from the society is because of their crime. People decided to exclude dangerous people from the society until prisoners are safe and ready to rejoin the society. Therefore, the access to the prison is limited. Since prisoners are considered dangerous, they are being watched most of the time. The prison exists to take control over the prisoners, because there are possibilities of prison break, murder, and any other crimes. Both prison guards and cameras are watching the prisoners. The prison is surrounded by concrete walls, fences and towers.

Zoo is another good example of secured zone. Zoo is an exhibit-display and jittery space. Tourists visit a zoo to watch animals and shows for entertainment reason. Many different animals are displayed often inside of cage or behind a glass. The animals are under control of zoo keepers by limiting the inhabit space. The zoo visitors are also under control of the zoo by using the signs and camera. The intention of the signs and camera is to prevent visitors entering the cage or feeding animals. The zoo is less protected than the prison, because it is less dangerous in terms of fatality. Prisoners are more dangerous than animals, because humans are more intellectual than animals and committed a crime once or more.

At army base entrance, there are obstacles placed in a jig-zag form. The obstacles limit the speed of a vehicle both entering and exiting the military base. Two armed soldiers are guarding the gate at the post. The gate is defended with fences and concrete walls where camera is installed. Since the access to the army base is strictly prohibited, I would say this space is jittery. The function of the gate is to filter those who pass this check point. Only people who are authorized can pass through here.

During this week’s research, I was thinking we judge which signs are trangressive or not by the definition of transgressive semiotic was given by Scollon and Scollon. Therefore, our thoughts had been limited by their definition. Personally, I do not agree that graffiti is transgressive. No one told people to paint only on canvas. We can paint on wherever we want, thus painting on the wall is in the right place in some way. The painting could be on a person, rock, vehicle, watch, anywhere. There is no limitation to the art. People cannot indicate where to paint and not to paint. The only reason I would accept for considering graffiti as transgressive is when graffiti was painted on a place where the artists and the owner of the place did not negotiate. If the owner did not agree with the painter, the painter does not have any right to paint on the owner’s place. Graffiti without an agreement should be considered as trangressive.

This advertisement shows a man and a woman are blocked by clean window or may be a door, I don’t know. They could not see the obstacle ahead of them due to the ‘transparent’ window which cleaned by the detergent product on the left bottom corner. The ad emphasizes the detergent product cleans so well that it can even trick people’s bare eyes. I thought the ad was only focusing on their product’s aspect and a humor rather than the modality, but I actually saw people who collided with window just like in the image. I even saw the news that a man was fatally injured after walking through a window. After all, I started to think this ad is both strong on giving message to the viewers and the modality.

I don’t know where the image is from, but I believe it is from somewhere in the Europe during period of George W. Bush presidency. On the poster, there are Adolf Hitler and George W. Bush, and there are ‘Same shit different asshole!’ text below them. Moreover, there is blood is coming down from the top. From the image, the viewers can very easily notify that Both of them are same shit but in a different way. Hitler massacred Jewish people during the Second World War, while Bush caused many deaths from the Iraqi War. Since this poster is not a photo, modality cannot be considered. However, the poster gives very negative message on Bush by comparing and using explict texts and person. I believe this kind of political sign should not be posted on the public, because this type of sign would only bring an anger from the people whoever against the Iraqi War and Bush. Also, using such extreme words are inappropriate in the public.

The phrase at the right bottom is “When the biased stopped(same pronunciation of folding), their ability will be shown” Meaning, when people stop looking handicaps with biased opinion, people can see something they can do or new from them. The original icon of handicaps is a person on a wheelchair, but in this image, the person is sitting on a chair as the folded paper piece is covering the wheelchair part. The intention of this ad is to promote the handicaps. In Korea particularly, not many people have a good image of handicaps. For some reason, people think handicaps cannot work or live without normal people’s help. As the paper is folded the handicap icon does not look no longer like a handicap but a normal business man on a chair and the word ‘stopped’ has same pronunciation of folding which gives a slight stronger effect on understanding the ad. I think this ad is failure. The idea may be creative, but the icon of handicap itself does not give viewers an impact of handicaps. Therefore, the ad looks like a stylish font saying help the handicaps on a blank page. I would rather used a photo of real handicap working at a desk. Since the ad contains only icon and text, it does not have any modality.

The sign above the trash can says ‘Leaving a trash in this place is not permitted’
It is both index and symbol, because the sign tells people not to leave a garbage. Instead, people placed a trash can which makes the sign as a symbol. I thought the sign was irony in terms of how it has been used and worked on the other way around now. The photo has taken at the parking lot in my apartment.

The photo has taken at Imjin river train station which is one of train stations near North Korea. The real name of the bridge is Imjin river bridge, but it is now called as ‘The Bridge of No Return’ The bridge works as both icon and symbol. The bridge represents the connection between South and North Korea. The original bridge had been destroyed during Korean War, but has been rebuilt several years ago. It had been used only for business route, however the gate through the bridge is again blocked by North Korea. After the incident, people began to call it as ‘The Bridge of No Return’ I feel like this bridge represents as same as how Berlin Wall used to be except that the form is the bridge. South and North Korea may close together geographically, but far apart from fundamental notions: democracy and communism. The bridge is placed between them.

The photo has taken at 38th parallel line of Korea. This is another photo which is both icon and symbol on same issue above. On the left, North Korean soldiers are defending the area while South Korean soldiers are defending on the right. The border line later became full of mines, invisible wall between the South and North Korea. The photo represents the division of the South and North Korea. ** in addition, you can clearly see both South and North Korean soldiers look similar in terms of shape as they are both Koreans, but North Koreans deployed more units than South Korean to show how cautious they are. South Koreans are less deployed than the North, but well-equipped. This shows the status of the two countries. Moreover, South Korea is protected by the US Army.
